Joanna Moncrieff is a psychiatrist, researcher, and author based at University College London. Her work examines the foundations of modern psychiatric practice, especially our assumptions about how psychiatric drugs work and why we use them.

For decades, the dominant idea has been the disease-centred model: the view that mental disorders are caused by underlying chemical abnormalities, and medications correct those abnormalities.
